Save on your heating bill – Turn down the heat
One of the quickest ways to save on your heating bill is to turn your thermostat down. This may seem a little ironic to be suggesting with winter right around the bend but this can lead to a decent amount of savings. I’m not talking about drastically reducing the temperature but decreasing it by a couple of degrees. Even a couple of degrees will yield decent savings over the course of the year. It doesn’t have to be cold in your home but just a little cooler than what you normally have it. This can be done by turning the heat down at night, as some people sleep better when it’s a little bit colder.
How much savings?
So how much can you save on your heating bill? It has been reported that decreasing the thermostat by 1° can yield about 3% savings. Let’s say you spend $100 a month on heating and keep your house at 70 degrees. If you were to decrease the heat to 66 degrees, you could save around 12% which in this case would come out to $12 per month. At the end of the year, you would have saved close to $150. This may mean wearing an extra layer of clothing at home but you are able to save money without changing any major habits. There are a lot of variables that come into play such as space and insulation; so everybody’s savings will be a little bit different.
Electronic thermostat
One of the easiest ways to regulate the temperature without much for thought is to get an electronic thermostat. I was lucky enough that the house that I bought had these pre-installed. These make it nice as you can set it to change the temperature throughout the course of the day and evening, even customizing the times to your liking. I have the Honeywell thermostat and it has been a blessing. The thermostat can be set to 66 degrees in the middle of the day and at night and warm up to 68-70 degrees around the time I get home. With this in mind, you don’t need anything fancy for a thermostat. Just turning the temperature down by a couple degrees can save you money without having to install anything. It is easy to save on your heating bill if you are adjustable. Remember this doesn’t need to be a drastic change in temperature. But it can indeed save you money overall. It may mean throwing on an extra layer of clothes or curling up on the couch with a blanket.
