Are you ready to make a splash into the seas again with the Disney Live Entertainment team as they prepare “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure.” This is due to the all-new theatrical production set to premiere at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Disney has released a behind-the-scenes look at the show coming in Fall of 2024. It looks like it will be a substantial improvement on the prior show.
The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure adds some new flair
This fresh take on the classic Walt Disney Animation Studios film “The Little Mermaid” features entirely new physical sets, a new cast of puppets, live performers, and breathtaking visuals.
“We imagined what Ariel’s room might look like and developed a collage style that you’ll see throughout the production,” said Sarah Schmidt, Creative Concept Artist & Illustrator for Disney Live Entertainment. “This new look influenced every design decision, from the scenic elements to the puppets and even the custom digital content.”
One of the biggest changes to the show is the creative blend of practical and projected scenic design. Which will use both real and digital puppetry. This is where the team will be utilizing state-of-the-art technology along with more traditional.
Part of this is using innovative digital imagery integrated into the show to enhance the on-stage action. Moreover, the goal is to bring characters like Ursula and King Triton to life. The show is said to begin with an all-new “Daughters of Triton” number. Furthermore, it should be showcasing this blend of real and digital elements.
A word from the director
“We’re using advanced tools like motion capture technology, similar to what’s used in blockbuster films,” explained James Silson, Show Director. “A live performer wears a suit with sensors, and the data from their performance helps us create digital animations of the characters, which our animators then bring to life on stage.”
“We’re blurring the lines between the real and digital in unprecedented ways to fill the stage with these show-stopping scenes,” James added. “You’ll see large physical set pieces blend seamlessly with digital environments. Digital puppets will transform into real ones before your eyes, and animated characters will perform alongside live actors. It’s going to feel like magic!”
What is Little Mermaid A Musical Adventure replacing?
A live performance of Voyage of the Little Mermaid was a feature of Disney’s Hollywood Studios at the Disney World. This was an abridged version of the Little Mermaid movie from 1989. In addition to a combination of real actors and puppets, the presentation included effects like light rain and laser projections onto the auditorium walls. This was closed at the start of 2020 and never reopened.
