If you have watched the news over the past few months, you may have seen that Disney has been making big moves. They have been buying up both land and companies. Back in December 2018, Disney bought 965 acres of land Southwest of Celebration. Now Disney acquires more land, around 1500 + acres, and is adjacent to the purchase near Celebration from December. This purchase was official as of January 3rd.
What it will be used for?
Disney had tried to purchase this land from Oren Brown, who owned the ranch property and had notoriously refused to sell it to Walt Disney. But has now been purchased for 11 million dollars. The thought behind the latest purchase is that it could be used mostly for water conservation and wetlands mitigation. With this being the case it looks as though Disney World may be looking to expand its property.
It has also been reported that the land has an active permit from the South Florida Water Management District and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Which points towards Walt Disney World using the land for mitigation banking. What this means is that Walt Disney World will be able to preserve this land as a wetland and Forest area in order to make changes to another section of land that was purchased previously. It basically becomes a preservation area to mitigate the overall environmental impact park expansion elsewhere.
This is in the midst of huge expansions from Hollywood Studios and the addition of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge to the Guardians of the Galaxy roller coaster at Epcot. With everything that has been discussed, it seems likely this will be a preserved area and left as a wetland. But we can expect that there will be significant changes coming in the future to Walt Disney World.
